What Does All Inclusive Actually Include? A Honest Guide for UK Travellers

"All-inclusive" means very different things at different resorts. Before you book, here is exactly what to check — from premium spirits and scuba diving to spa treatments and airport transfers — and the questions every traveller should ask their travel agent.

The phrase "all-inclusive" is one of the most misleading in the travel industry. At a basic resort it might mean three buffet meals and a selection of domestic spirits. At a luxury property it can mean unlimited fine dining across ten restaurants, premium international spirits, scuba diving, non-motorised watersports, spa credits, butler service, and complimentary excursions. Knowing exactly what is included before you book — and what will appear on a bill at checkout — is essential to budgeting accurately and choosing the right property.

The Core Inclusions: What Should Always Be Standard

At a genuinely luxury all-inclusive resort, the following should be included without question: all meals at all restaurants (including à la carte, without reservation surcharges), premium branded spirits and international wines throughout the day and evening, non-motorised watersports (kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling equipment), and non-motorised water sports. Airport transfers should also be included, or at minimum offered at a fixed and transparent rate. If any of these are listed as extras or upgrades at a property marketing itself as luxury all-inclusive, treat that as a red flag.

The Variables: What Differs Between Resorts

Scuba diving is the single biggest variable between luxury all-inclusive properties. Sandals Resorts include unlimited scuba diving for certified divers as standard across all their Caribbean properties — a benefit worth approximately £70–£120 per person per day if purchased independently. Most other all-inclusive resorts, including many five-star properties, do not include scuba diving in the base rate, charging instead per dive or per certification course. If diving matters to you, verify this specifically before booking.

Spa treatments are almost universally excluded from all-inclusive packages, though some properties include a welcome treatment or a spa credit (typically £50–£100 per couple) on arrival. At Sandals resorts, spa treatments are charged at standard rates. At properties like Soneva Jani in the Maldives, certain wellness treatments and yoga sessions are included. Check the specific terms for your chosen property.

Motorised watersports — jet skiing, parasailing, speedboat excursions, and wakeboarding — are rarely included in all-inclusive packages, even at luxury level. Budget for these separately if they are activities you plan to enjoy.

Excursions off the resort are excluded at almost all all-inclusive properties. Catamaran tours, volcano hikes, island tours, and snorkelling excursions are typically charged at standard tour operator rates. Some resorts offer a complimentary excursion as part of a honeymoon or special occasion package — ask specifically when booking.

Premium dining experiences — private beach dinners, overwater restaurant tables, or tasting menus — sometimes attract a supplementary charge even at all-inclusive properties. At Sandals, private candlelit dinners on the beach are included for butler suite guests; at other resorts, they may incur a charge of £80–£200 per couple. Confirm before booking if this is important to your holiday experience.

Sandals All-Inclusive: What's Actually Included

Sandals Resorts operate what they term an "Ultra All-Inclusive" model, which genuinely warrants the distinction. Across all Caribbean Sandals properties, the standard inclusion covers: all meals at all restaurants (five to twelve depending on the resort), premium international spirits including top-shelf brands, unlimited land and water sports including scuba diving for certified divers, green fees at selected golf courses, live entertainment, and transfers between Sandals properties within the same island. The WeddingMoons package adds a complimentary wedding ceremony for qualifying stays. There is no tipping policy — tipping is genuinely not expected or accepted. This last point is culturally significant: at a true luxury all-inclusive, the absence of tipping culture is as much a statement about the experience as the quality of the food.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

Before confirming any all-inclusive reservation, ask your travel specialist or the resort directly: Are all restaurants included with no reservation supplement? Are premium international spirits included, or only house brands? Is scuba diving included for certified divers? Are motorised watersports included? Are airport transfers included? Are there any mandatory charges (resort fees, service charges, or gratuities) that appear at checkout? Is room service included at all hours? Are minibar items replenished complimentary? The answers to these questions will tell you far more about the true all-inclusive value of a property than any marketing brochure.
